At the entrance to the village, next to the bar/restaurant "La Parada," is a small grocery store. Another bar is only open on weekends. The village also has a bakery, a tobacconist, a post office, a pharmacy, and a health center. A stone's throw from the house is a small square where various shopkeepers stop at various times. When you hear the horn, the vendor calls out: "Come and buy!" The baker comes up to three times a day, and the fishmonger is regularly there around lunchtime. Occasionally, frozen products and fresh fruit and vegetables are also sold! From the house, you can take both short and longer walks. A recommended walk is to the "Castillejo," the ruins of a Moorish fortress. You can see the fort from the rooftop terrace, and it's only a half-hour walk. At the top of the fort, you are rewarded with a magnificent view over the valley. You can extend the walk by heading down to the village below, "Guájar Fondon," where you can stop for a refreshment at the local bar. The return trip to the house can be made via a different path, allowing you to extend the walk to about two hours through the mountains, passing avocado, cherimoya, almond, olive, and citrus trees. You will soon understand why the Moors called this valley "The Hidden Gardens."Halfway to "Guájar Alto," the third village in the valley, you will pass a small gorge with a waterfall on the right. At the entrance of the village, on the left, is the popular bar "Carmen," a beloved spot for a meal on the weekend. People come from far and wide to Carmen for generous portions of local dishes, such as "Choto" (goat meat) and "Conejo" (rabbit), which are carefully prepared. In summer, the "La Toba" river (just above Guájar Alto) is dammed, creating a natural swimming pool. The locals refer to it as the "beach of Los Guajares." The pool is large enough to swim in and is a delightful place to cool off, with shady trees and picnic tables nearby. Costa Tropical:Just a 20-minute drive away, you can reach the Costa Tropical, where you can enjoy a wide range of beautiful beaches. The main coastal towns are Salobreña, Almuñécar, and La Herradura, where you can also go diving. Further along the coast toward Málaga is Nerja, famous for the "Balcón de Europa." Many visitors combine a trip to Nerja with a visit to the "Nerja Caves" or the picturesque village of Frigiliana. Between La Herradura and Nerja, there are three pristine natural coves that are popular with nudists and dog lovers. In Motril (20 minutes away), you’ll find larger supermarkets as well as charming boutiques in the town center. Motril is an authentic town, without the tourist crowds, making it a lovely place to hang out. The old sugar factory has been converted into an interesting museum. Fun fact: just a few years ago, sugar cane was still being grown along the Costa Tropical. Between Motril and Salobreña, you’ll find a golf course right by the beach, ideal for golf enthusiasts. At the Costa Tropical, you can ski in the "Sierra Nevada" in the morning and golf in the afternoon during the winter. Who else has that luxury? The ski slopes open in early November and stay open until May 1st. During the high season, you can choose from more than 85 km of slopes, suitable for all levels.Hiking:In summer, you can take a unique hike along the "Rio Chillar," which ends at a beautiful water pool for a refreshing swim. If you’re looking for a more challenging hike in a rougher environment, you can head to "Junta del Río" and climb the mountain through the "Rio Verde" near Ótivar. The mountain lakes there are truly breathtaking!Granada:In less than an hour, you can reach Granada, famous for the impressive "Alhambra." This is Spain’s most visited attraction, so make sure to book in advance! In July and August, a stage is set up in the Alhambra gardens, where almost every evening, a spectacular flamenco performance is held. Granada itself is also worth visiting! The old district of "Albayzín" offers a breathtaking view of the Alhambra, with the Sierra Nevada in the background. The area around the cathedral is perfect for shopping lovers. A visit to Granada is especially special around May 3rd, when "Día de la Cruz" is celebrated. During this time, the crosses in the city are beautifully decorated—a long-standing tradition you won’t want to miss.Alpujarra:Just a 50-minute drive away is the "Alpujarra," with charming villages like "Pampaneira," "Bubión," "Capileira," "Pitres," "La Taha," "Portugos," and Spain's highest village, "Trevélez" (75 minutes). Trevélez is known for its ham, which is dried in the dry mountain air. The Alpujarra is a paradise for nature lovers, with countless short and long hikes, which you can do with or without a guide. You can even climb Spain's highest mountain, El Mulhacén (3479 m). Mountain biking, quad biking, or horseback riding are also options! On the way to the Alpujarra, you'll pass through the unique village of "Órgiva," which is home to a mix of old and young hippies from around the world. It's a vibrant and harmonious community that shines the most on market day, every Thursday. It's no surprise that you'll find many artists and craftsmen in the region. Village festival:When it comes to festivals, you won’t know where to start! "Guájar Faragüit" celebrates its biggest festival in August, around the 10th and 11th, in honor of their patron saint, San Lorenzo. This festival is a must-experience: 4 to 5 days of celebration, mostly at night to escape the heat, and some daytime rest. On the evenings of the 10th and 11th, there’s a procession from the church to the bar, followed by impressive fireworks and live music all night long. Casitas La Cueva is the perfect spot for a family vacation near the Costa Tropical, a hiking holiday in the Alpujarras, a cultural trip to Granada, a romantic getaway in the Valle de Lecrín, or even for a long-term rental in Andalusia.
